Canada Citizenship Calculator

Estimate your physical presence toward the Canadian citizenship requirement using your permanent resident date, qualifying pre-PR time, trips outside Canada, and any non-counting sentence periods.

1. Enter your key dates

2. Add trips outside Canada

Add trips that fall within the five years before the application date. Under IRCC's standard calculation method, the day you leave Canada and the day you return are counted as days in Canada. Only full days between them are treated as absent.

3. Add qualifying time in Canada before permanent residence

Qualifying days in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident can count as half-days, up to a maximum credit of 365 days.

Temporary resident categories include visitors, students, workers, and temporary resident permit holders. Protected person time generally begins when the claim or eligible protection application was approved. Do not enter time when you did not have qualifying status.

4. Add non-counting prison, parole or probation periods, if applicable

Time serving a term of imprisonment, on parole, or on probation in Canada generally does not count toward physical presence.

IRCC lists exceptions, including certain successfully completed conditional discharge probation and certain youth sentences. Do not subtract a period that IRCC says you do not need to declare.

This result estimates physical presence only. It does not confirm overall citizenship eligibility and does not replace IRCC's official physical presence calculation.

How the Canada citizenship physical presence calculation works

For a standard grant of Canadian citizenship under subsection 5(1), the Citizenship Act requires at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada during the five years immediately before the application date.

The application date itself is not counted. For example, if you sign an application on April 1, the calculation ends on March 31.

Each qualifying day physically present in Canada as a permanent resident counts as one full day. Qualifying time physically present in Canada before permanent residence as a temporary resident or protected person counts as one-half day, up to a maximum pre-PR credit of 365 days.

Formula used by this calculator

Estimated physical presence = countable permanent resident days + the lesser of (qualifying pre-PR days × 0.5) or 365 days

The calculator subtracts full days outside Canada from the relevant periods. In line with IRCC's published physical presence instructions, the day you leave Canada and the day you return to Canada are treated as days physically present in Canada.

Non-counting imprisonment, parole, or probation periods entered in the calculator are also removed without double-counting days that were already excluded as absences.

What counts as qualifying pre-PR time?

IRCC says that qualifying temporary resident status can include lawful status as a visitor, student, worker, or temporary resident permit holder. A protected person can also receive pre-PR credit for qualifying time after receiving a positive protection decision and before becoming a permanent resident.

Each qualifying physical day counts as one-half day. Therefore, 730 qualifying physical days before permanent residence can provide the maximum 365-day credit.

Time spent merely waiting for a refugee claim or protection decision does not automatically qualify. Enter only periods for which you are satisfied that you held a status IRCC allows you to count.

Important limits of this calculator

This tool estimates physical presence. It is not an official determination that you qualify for citizenship. Canadian citizenship has other requirements, including permanent resident status, applicable tax filing obligations, citizenship prohibitions, and, for many applicants aged 18 to 54, language and citizenship knowledge requirements.

This calculator also does not implement the special rules that may allow certain time outside Canada to count for Crown servants or qualifying family members of Crown servants. If those rules may apply to you, use IRCC's official guidance and physical presence calculator.

Sentence-related rules also contain exceptions. For example, IRCC states that certain successfully completed probation following a conditional discharge and certain successfully completed youth sentences may be treated differently. The sentence-period fields above should therefore be used only for periods that actually need to be excluded under IRCC's rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting the date the citizenship application will be signed.
  • Leaving out short trips or day trips outside Canada.
  • Counting the departure and return dates themselves as full days absent.
  • Counting pre-PR time without valid temporary resident or protected person status.
  • Counting more than 365 days of pre-PR credit.
  • Forgetting that only days inside the five-year eligibility period can be used.
  • Assuming that reaching 1,095 physical presence days automatically means every other citizenship requirement has been met.

Why might another calculator give a different result?

Differences can arise from missing travel dates, overlapping status periods, sentence-related exceptions, special Crown servant rules, or a different application date. The five-year eligibility period also moves when the application date changes, so older days eventually fall outside the calculation window.

IRCC specifically encourages applicants to apply with more than the minimum 1,095 days in case an absence or another part of the calculation was recorded incorrectly.

Methodology

The calculator uses the standard physical presence method published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It creates the five-year period immediately before the selected application date, counts eligible permanent resident days at full value, calculates qualifying pre-PR physical presence at one-half day per day up to 365 days, and subtracts applicable absences and entered non-counting sentence periods.

Overlapping periods are merged before days are counted so the same date is not added or subtracted twice. Calculations use calendar days rather than hours.
